Veritas Team Huddle Compiled By Laura ModestoInspired by an almost-disaster in B.C, this week, this the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) gets a Touchdown from the Veritas team for its reaction to a YouTube video) that captured the dangerous practice of "high marking," and the near-death experience of a snowmobiler who triggered a sizeable avalanche in the process. When it comes to media relations and getting your message out, we advise our clients to be proactive. But sometimes it's just as important to REACT. The CAC leveraged the YouTube video to raise awareness about one of their key messages: avalanche safety. After the deadliest avalanche season for snowmobilers on record, this message is relevant and timely, hence the pick-up by media outlets across the country. CAC also gets the Touchdown for recognizing the importance of social media and the role it plays in the mainstream media. Things like this YouTube video are ready-made news bites. They're like a bit of b-roll footage, and now we're seeing media build their stories around them. The lesson? Pay attention to the online world and don't be afraid to speak up when the opportunity presents itself.
